SALAAM,
IS THERE ANY PARTICULAR AGE ATTAINMENT B4 MARRIAGE IN ISLAM?
IF YES, HOW AND WHY?IF NO,HOW AND WHY?
THANKS,
salamu alaik,
basically, there's no age restriction for marriage of girls in Islam. for boys, all I know is that they should attain the age of puberty.
These are a few ahadith on this question. The Prophet said:
"All young men who have arrived at the age of puberty should marry, for marriage prevents sins. He who cannot marry should fast."
"Marry women who will love their husbands and be very prolific, for I wish you to be more numerous than any other people."
"When anyone demands your daughter in marriage and you are pleased with his disposition and his faith, then give her to him; for if you do not so, there will be strife and contention in the world."
"When any of you wishes to demand a woman in marriage, if he can arrange it, let him see her first."
"A woman ripe in year shall have her consent asked in marriage, and if she remains silent, her silence is her consent, and if she refuse, she shall not be married by force."
"A widow shall not be married until she be consulted, nor shall a virgin be married until her consent be asked." then the Companions said: "In what manner is the permission of a virgin?" He replied, "Her consent is by her silence."
"If a woman marries without the consent of her guardian, her marriage is null and void, is null and void, is null and void; then if her marriage has been consummated, the woman shall take her dower; if her guardians dispute about her marriage, then the king is her guardian."... from all these we can summarize the following:
1. A woman cannot be forced to marry anyone, be it a virgin, or widow.
2. A woman cannot marry without the permission of her parents/guardians. If her guardians/family are not in agreement among themselves as to whether or not she should marry a particular man, the king/ruler of the town/city is her guardian.
3. It is preferable for a man to approach a woman with a proposal before approaching the family to give her in marriage.
4. The main conditions for a man to get married are his attainment of the age of puberty, capacity to support his family (whether directly or indirectly) and his faith. The latter two conditions have been left to the woman's family to determine. Capacity of a man to marry a woman depends on the socio-economic conditions in the person's town/city/nation.
5. Objection to marriage is reserved for the girl, married in her infancy by her parents/guardians, upon reaching puberty. She has to ratify or dissolve the marriage contract at this point.
